Updated 11/19/12 – Black Friday comes around every year and provides consumers some great deals. However, it appears that Black Friday is turning into Gray Thursday this year with some major stores like Target opening at 9:00 p.m. Thanksgiving night. Most of us (me) will be slumbering in a Turkey/Pumpkin pie coma catching up on some much needed sleep. But, there are those like my sister in law who will be braving the crowds at “O’dark thirty” to try to grab some deals. Below are 7 apps we looked at last year that should definitely save you a few bucks and help you find some deals ahead of those appless fools next to you still using a flip phone. The Black Friday iPhone app looks solid with a simplified user interface. There are only 3 tabs on the lower navigation (Stores, Categories, and Views [requires free sign up at FatWallet.com]). A quick look shows a healthy list of mostly large retail stores, but lots of mall type stores are missing in this app. Easy to use, targeted information, but a lack of information for each sale is evident. The filtering system is hard to figure out and definitely not user intuitive.

BFAds.net Black Friday
BFAds.net Black Friday provides some brand icons on the main search page and the search filters are decent. However, I got stuck in the search filter and had to delete my search term and reset the filter to get back to the main screen. This app also does not include mall stores like Holister, Forever 21, and so on. The shopping list feature did not work during testing, just got a white screen with no functionality.

Black Friday App
The Black Friday App displayed the participating store information very well with icons for the stores, has categories, a search tab and a deals tab that is very nice allowing you to see deals as they become available. You can tap into a deal, save it view it online and buy now. I tried the buy now feature and it was slow for some items, obviously a sever issue, but overall this is a very nice BF app. Lastly, this app has a My List tab that shows all deals you save to while perusing deals and without having to create an account.

Black Friday Ads
Black Friday Ads iPhone app provides some extra store information that other apps lack. This app has Black Friday participating stores as well as a huge list of all stores presented A to Z. But, there are still mall clothing stores missing, I know this due to having 3 teenage daughters. This app presents the deals in a recent tab and also goes to the trouble of providing staff picks to help your deal searching. There is a favorite tab to save your deals to, but confusingly most deals offer “get deal” with a check mark indicating the deal is available, yet no deals could be gotten, thinking either the app is not working correctly or the deal is not available until BF. Another issue I had with this app is the deals appeared to be a bit weak, like slippers and Barbies, but no TV’s, or tech stuff prominently displayed, weird.

TGI Black Friday
TGI Black Friday is one of the best of all of the BF FREE apps so far. This app has a home tab with both popular and newest ads, stores (pretty much the same as all the others), categories (nicely displayed with icons), search and a My List (no account necessary). The coolest store included in this app is the iTunes App Store featuring 112 iPhone/iPad apps on sale (awesome). This app was fast and I could shop the deals that were listed.

This app is extremely well made and provides a lot of awesome deals, through the top level filters of popular, new and free. When checking out the deals you can share them on Twitter, Facebook, and email as well as add deals to your favorites. This app has a large list of participating Cyber Monday stores, deals, and easy to search categories. Easily save your favorite deals to your My Deals tab for saved viewing. Great app!
