Amazing Alex or Casey's Contraptions

Amazing Alex (by Rovio Entertainment) is an iPhone/iPad game that used to be called Casey’s Contraptions/Casey’s Contraptions HD, but has been re-skinned as Amazing Alex. Regardless, it still features plenty of entertaining and tricky physics puzzle gameplay. I recall the game Case’s Contraptions from last year, but it never made it onto our YouTube channel or blog. But now having been rebranded by app heavyweights Rovio Entertainment, this app quickly rose to the top spot in the iTunes App Store for both the iPhone and iPad. The game is definitely awesome with over 100 levels, crisp graphics, detailed animations, and classic casual puzzle gameplay.

The rub for some is that Rovio makes this statement in the Amazing Alex iTunes App Store description, “AN AMAZING NEW PHYSICS PUZZLE GAME FROM THE CREATORS OF ANGRY BIRDS!” While not untrue, this is hardly a new creation. This doesn’t bother me, but some serious gamers appear to be a bit inflamed, and (for me) it would have been easier to include a mention of Casey’s Contraptions in the iTunes description just to be honest — it’s not like people have not figured this out. The real bummer is for those who actually laid out either $0.99 for Casey’s Contraptions or $2.99 for Casey’s Contraptions HD (just so happens to be the pricing for Amazing Alex and Amazing Alex HD) since these apps have been removed from the iTunes App Store and will not be supported by the original developer or owners, Rovio Entertainment. This is not stunning news and this sort of thing happens all the time, but a little better customer or community support would go a long way in pleasing the customer and building loyalty in this age of social media.

Amazing Alex, as stated, has a bunch of puzzle gameplay in various game packs, like the Classroom and Alex’s Bedroom which have unique objects that you must use to solve each puzzle. Puzzles also include 3 stars to obtain to unlock gameplay faster. A nice feature, but one I am not interested in, is the opportunity to create your own Amazing Alex game levels. You can create a level using the level editor and upload this to the Amazing Alex website for others to play, and your level may actually get featured giving you a bit of acclaim. As for me, I just want to play games, not create levels, but to each his own. Another aspect of the level editor is the opportunity to download user-generated levels, which adds to the gameplay, but some levels are better than others — you will quickly understand this. Amazing Alex is a great game, the only reason we are not giving it a whopping 5 Crazy Mike’s Heads is due to the poor public relations handling — as community does matter.
