If you’re scrambling right now for some Thanksgiving dinner ideas that’ll make your holiday meal planning easy and extra special, the Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual is the mobile app for you. This free iOS Universal Food & Drink app, by Conde Nast Digital, comes with 101 tasty recipes and 4 beautiful menu plans that include specialty drinks. You’ll also get step-by-step instructions, helpful tips and how-to videos, and a time schedule that’ll keep you right on course.
These Thanksgiving dinner ideas come from the Bon Appétit test kitchen, so you know that this trusted food and entertainment magazine (and website) won’t steer you wrong. When I initially opened up this Thanksgiving menu planner app, I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful gallery of photos featuring all 101 alphabetized recipes just waiting for me to scroll through, starting with Apple Pie With Spiced Apple-Carmel Sauce and ending with Winter Squash with Spiced Butter.
The user interface is clean and uncluttered with everything neatly organized and simply categorized. The navigation can be a little touchy and confusing at times, but overall I was able to easily find my way around this Thanksgiving recipe app. With 101 recipes to discover, it won’t take you long to find a recipe that piques your interest. You can tap on a food photo in the gallery to bring back information on your selected recipe, or use the “Categories” button (upper right) to quickly get to all the grouped recipes: Sides, Gravy; Brines, Stock, Etc.; Salads, Drinks, and more.
But if you’re in a hurry, you can go right to the “Menus” tab to find 4 perfectly planned Thanksgiving dinner menus. Each plan also comes with specialty drinks that are sure to compliment your meal nicely. Under this “Menus” tab you will find your choice of Classic, Modern, Southern and New Traditions Thanksgiving dinner ideas.
Since Thanksgiving dinner can be the most stressful part of the planning process, I love Food & Drink apps that do the tedious and hard work for you by selecting just the right food dishes (that compliment one another) to make the dinner a success. After looking through the food pairings for the 4 different menus, I think Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual did a great job of creating a nice variety of menus to suit a wide range of people. Just so you know, all these Thanksgiving dishes are proportioned to feed 8-12 people. Unfortunately, there’s no way to automatically edit and adjust the number of servings in this app if you have less (or more) people. It would be a great feature to add in a future app update, as well as an automatic grocery list maker.
While browsing through this Thanksgiving app, I found stunning photos for every recipe, as well as plenty of simple recipes, in an easy-to-follow format. Along with each recipe you will find the expected list of ingredients and preparation methods. In addition, there are short written tips and quick how-to videos to clue you in on useful things such as 3 ways to fix lumpy gravy, the proper way to use specific kitchen tools, and even one tip that’s as simple as using a plate to keep your turkey submerged in the liquid while brining the bird in a big pot.
In addition to all that, the Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual has a special “Step-By-Step Kitchen Mode” feature that walks you through each recipe from start to finish, and even includes things you can prepare a day ahead of time, like dressing. The only thing to point out in this area of the app is that the navigation feels a bit clumsy as you swipe down to get to cooking instructions and then swipe to the right and left to access step-by-step instructions. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be well on your way to creating a perfect holiday meal. Believe me, this free Thanksgiving dinner ideas app is worth the slight adjustment.
Another great feature is the timed scheduler that keeps you on task, and in the right amount of time allotted for your specific Thanksgiving menu. Now you don’t have to guess how much time you need for each individual dish to finish cooking in order to have everything ready at the same time.
I don’t know about you, but this used to be one of the most frustrating things for me to coordinate until I discovered this feature in another awesome Thanksgiving meal planner app that I used last year to prepare and host our Thanksgiving meal. With the Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual app, you can either follow the timed chart for your meal manually or add your calendar date and then sync with your iCal calendar, which is supposed to remind you when to do each task.
Although we won’t be hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year, I look forward to using this Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual app next year. Overall, I really like the Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual app and thinks it’s a great cooking app to help you easily plan, cook and present a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner that you and everyone else will be thankful for.
There is one more thing I should mention. When I looked through some of the iTunes’ app reviews, there were some complaints of crashing recently by other users. Personally, I didn’t experience any of these issues. If any of you use this application for your Thanksgiving meal plan this year, please let us know how your Thanksgiving meal turned out and your experience using the Thanksgiving: A Bon Appétit Manual.
