CrazyMike Gets His iPhone 4S – Oh, Happy Day!

Having been in the iPhone app review space for several years, I have become accustomed to getting the latest iPhones and iPads; accustomed in the sense that each upgrade has its own issues. Upgrading to the iPhone 4S was no different and the journey for this new iDevice began on 10/07/11 when I ordered my 64GB black iPhone 4S. I was initially on the fence about getting a larger size iPhone 4S, but due to the amount of apps I have on my iPhone 4, it actually was a no brainer. The price is another story.

I got up at 3:00 a.m. est. on 10/07/11 to order my iPhone 4S and should have realized it would not be that easy. I sat from 3:00 a.m. est. to 4:45 a.m. est unsuccessfully trying to order my iPhone 4S. Frustrated, I went back to bed for a few hours, got up at 6:30 a.m. and ordered my iPhone 4S with no problems.

Once ordered, Apple’s superior customer service and shipping information kicked in and it was business as usual until yesterday 10/14/11. Unfortunately, UPS did not show up to the hacienda until 4:30 p.m., which was not that big of a deal except for the fact that I had to leave for a meeting and was unable to accept the delivery of my precious iPhone 4S. I did have a backup signer (one of my off spring whom I bribed with ice cream to ensure my iPhone 4S did not go back to the UPS warehouse for the weekend). All was well and the iPhone 4S was waiting for me when I returned home. I immediately began to go through the setup process (that was a little weak). I was unable to complete the setup over WiFi, had to tether, and I lost a variety of data, such as my favorite caller presets, phone ringtone, camera roll, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary, but not the exact deal I heard at the iPhone 4S launch by the Apple talking heads. All in all, it only took me about 20 minutes to get everything (including my 240 apps) loaded onto my new iPhone 4S. I actually began to panic in the early syncing because my storage bar for my iPhone 4S showed only about 2/5 full, but due to my upgrade to a 64GB my worry was for nothing as I have more space.

A quick review of the iPhone 4S

So far, there is absolutely nothing physically different between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, yes, not a shocker as to be expected. The speed is the key issue and most noticeable change. The syncing is where I first noticed it, my iPhone 4 would have taken twice as long to sync. The iPhone 4S is much faster, especially in loading games, but (for me) not that fast since I have been using an iPad 2 that also has the A5 duo core processor. I have not checked out the other new features fully so I will report on those later. Overall, I dig the new iPhone 4S and would recommend it to anyone who is an iPhone fan. However, not sure you will want to upgrade to this from an iPhone 4, because initial impression is there is not that much of a return on your investment and you may want to wait for the iPhone 5. I have to have the latest iPhones and iPad to review apps, tough job but someone has to do it. What are your thoughts on the new iPhone 4S? For more iPhone video app reviews. CM
