Eggscapade – Free Storybook & Game for Kids is an interactive Read and Play iPad storybook that combines a nice story with a fun integrated logic game revolving around Easter egg painting. Kids can enjoy Easter all year round with this storybook that includes an equally fun game — smack dab in the middle of the book. A unique feature to this book is that the game has to be completed before you get to see how the story ends — and there is a bit of drama in this book due to someone trying to sabotage the Mr. Bunny’s egg painting factory! This FREE iPad book has an ingenius mix of reading and playing called “Read ‘N Play,” which is aimed at encouraging children to read and have a little fun while doing so. The book can either be read through a narrator, which also provides highlighted text for kids to follow along as the text is read, or without narration by oneself (by turning the narrator off using the Read-Along switch on the homescreen of the app — narration on and off switch). The story has quite a bit of interactions on each page, some animations and lots of sounds that will surely grab a child’s attention — not to mention their imagination.
The game portion is an Easter Egg game where the player has to determine the correct way of coloring the Easter Egg in order to match the given picture example. There are only 2 paint colors currently (red and blue) and you’ll have to use a tea cup and masking tape to achieve the correctly colored/patterned eggs at times. I actually had to take a step back when I first entered the game part to ponder a bit. This game area is either accessed while reading the story after page 17 (26 pages total) or by tapping on Game when on the homescreen. While the puzzle was a little challenging at first, once you figure out how the game works it is fun. If you need instructions for the game, tap on the hint at the bottom and there is a solution button for young kids who may be stumped, which actually shows an animation of the correct coloring process. I would love to see more colors for this game, more patterns, etc. for added egg coloring fun, but Eggscapade – Free Storybook & Game for Kids is still a very well done book (it even includes a Pause/Stop button to stop the narration which is often missing in other quality books), and with the addition of a game wrapped around the story — this book is sure to make a lasting impression on kids.
