ESPN is the standard in sports on television and has a very nice FREE Android app to compliment their network, called ESPN ScoreCenter (sounds familiar). On the surface, this application is very good, but that goodness comes at a price, and the price in this case is the amount of your time it will take to figure out how to correctly customize this application for your taste in sports. However, once you figure out the setup, this is by far the best FREE sports app in the Android Market. The positives for me are the massive categories of sports that you can follow in this app. Accessing sports to follow can be found from the settings’ cog on the lower left, and this is important because if you don’t find this, you will get rather frustrated. The settings’ cog allows you to access all sorts of sports, not just NFL football, but NCAA football, and other sports have various sub categories to follow, so for some of you hardcore specific sports fans, you can access cricket sports information on a global tournament level, or by country — who would have “thunk” this possible? Once you add a sport, you will get a very nice individual screen added to the app with scores, news and standings, also you can get an alert setup if you create a myESPN account. This is where you may run into some frustration, at least I sure did.
You can either sign up for free with an email to create your myESPN account, or you can use your Facebook profile to login. I used my Facebook profile and have had all sorts of issues getting the app to recognize me, because weirdly enough, when using Facebook to log in, you still have to create a user name and password, which is kind of silly. I suggest using an email to make things simplified. The other issue with myESPN is that after logging in, it kept asking me to login, which was aggravating to say the least. But, I still found the sports display to be killer with colors that pop on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, as well as a great deal of sports news information beyond the specific sports I am following. There is a main screen called The Lead, which has scores for most current sports, the lastest sports news and videos. ESPN ScoreCenter is great, but would be even greater if they took a little time to retool the user interface to be a bit more friendly. However, this is a great FREE Android sports app, and if you are a sports fan it’s a must have — so get this app. Check out our other Android app reviews for more Android apps. Crazy Mike
