Update 03/25/12 – Thank you to Metallicatz_98 who brought to my attention that we made a mistake in our blog and mentioned that this app covers both Disney World and Disney Land, when in fact the application only covers the California Disney properties. Should have known better because we are only located approximately 1.5 hours from Disney World, and there are many more resort hotels here in Florida than what the application shows in California. We have some egg on our face for sure, but a little humility is good. Aside from our unfortunate blunder, this is still an excellent FREE iPad app to explore the California Disney properties, as well as enjoy playing a few games. CM
Disneyland is probably one of the most iconic names and places around the world when it comes to capturing excitement, imagination and overall feeling of childlike magic, helping kids (as well as adults) escape into the land of “make believe” — at least until the bill reality arrives for the parents. Now, Disney brings to you both their US theme parks and more in a very well-designed iPad app. Disneyland Explorer is a stunning 3D application with lots to see and do in both lands of “make believe” (Disneyland and Disney California Adventure). The folks at Disney have really outdone themselves in terms of providing a really fun experience captured in beautiful graphics, (mostly) logistically-correct presentation of all locations with a decent app navigation — once figured out. The app takes you right in the front door of Disneyland
(in Florida) and from there you can either swipe your way around or tap on the Mickey Mouse Icon on the top right to get to the navigation — this is where I got a bit lost. There are 4 main parts to the app (Hotels, Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Downtown Disney). Under each is where the index of all locations can be accessed. Once you get the hang of it, the app is easy to navigate but it may just take you a few moments, which is okay because the beautiful graphics and interaction opportunities make up for it.
A couple of things to look out for are the video icon and the black Mickey Mouse icon (in a gold star). These icons provide some engagement for users such as firing a cannon at passing ships, maybe boring for gamers but younger kids will love it. The World of Color, however, got my interest through dragging and dropping colorful images from well-known Disney cartoon movies into a video timeline of sorts, which then plays some spectacular color light shows. The videos pretty much speak for themselves and provide short video clips; tap on them and learn more about Disney. There are other icons to explore and you can “favorite” any place that has a pop-up by tapping on the heart on the left side of any pop-up. The only thing I did not readily find in this application was the exclusive digital postcards as described in the iTunes App Store description. I looked and tapped on just about everything in the app and nothing looked like a ready-to-send digital postcard. I did take some screen shots and sent some images that way, but not sure how the digital postcard feature worked. This brings me to my only complaint about the app being that perhaps there should be a navigation help button to describe how the app works, maybe with just a short infographic explaining all the icons. Besides not having all the Disney properties and a little bit of a shortfall in the navigation and help aspect, this app is still a beautiful and fun way to explore Disney, and possibly even escape to the land of “make believe” for just a little bit anyway — who doesn’t want to see the Magic Kingdom?
