There are plenty of free News apps for the iPhone and Android, but most are jam-packed with ads, require in-app purchases to get the full use of the app, or may limit your sources of news. But that’s not the case with Pipes. Pipes is different than most free News apps for the iPhone and Android.
The Pipes – All the news you need app does not have any advertising or in-app purchases. The developer, Doodle Creatives, also states in their FAQs (inside the application under Settings) that, “Pipes is free and the objective remains to keep at least one version free of charge, forever.” This bodes well for those of us looking for a high-quality News app at a low price, or in this case, for free. Now, let’s see exactly what features this news tracker app has.
Pipes App Overview
Pipes is a personalized news tracker app that allows you to track only those things that you find important. The way it works is through your very own personalized news feeds called “Pipes.” For example, say you are a big NFL fan and you want to follow all the upcoming news surrounding the upcoming draft (May 08, 2014 to May 10, 2014). No problem. Once this feed is added you can access all news stories for the title you have named your feed – in this case, NFL.
You can also be more specific and add a person, place, thing, city, or whatever other topic you want. The beauty of this app is that you only add the pipes you are interested in. However, the current version of Pipes (v. 1.1) only allows for a maximum of 10 pipes. Once you get to 10 pipes, you will not be able to add more. There is not even an option to purchase more pipes.
There is one pipe you cannot remove from the app, which is Top Stories. Top Stories tracks the top news stories from around the world. The pipe news articles come from a wide variety of web news sources, and this app is powered by Readability.
Pipes comes with a fun additional feature and that is the “shake to view trending” option. If you are looking for the latest trending news, just shake your iPhone or Android and a suggested trending pipe will pop up. You can choose to save this pipe or shake again if you don’t like it. This is an interesting option that can provide some news that you may not be aware of.
More Pipe Features
Pipes, of course, has share options for all the major social networks. And you can connect the Pipes app to your Pocket account. Don’t have connectivity? No problem, tap to save a story for later and you can read the entire article offline at your convenience. Also, you will have to connect to the Pipes app with G+, Facebook, or through an email, which is free, of course.
