Glu mobile continues the Frontline Commando title with the new Frontline Commando 2, another mercenary arcade shooter game. Lock and Load a variety of different weapons as you shoot your way through campaign or PvP game modes in this mostly challenging Android Action game.
The original iOS Frontline Commando series started way back in 12/2011. Since then, the developer (Glu Mobile) has matured the original shooter game into much better spin-off games that include Frontline Commando D-Day, an awesome WWII shooter game, and now Frontline Commando 2. This latest Frontline game features challenging campaign gameplay, but less challenging PvP gameplay. But Frontline Commando 2 has decent game rewards and is not as exacting (money wise) as other pay-to-play games.
Frontline Commando Game Overview
You are a forgotten MERC who rises from the ashes to assemble a team of pain ready to payback. Yes, Frontline Commando is a bit different than previous versions, now giving you the ability to add 3 squad mates to your killing team. Each squad mate has a speciality, be it tossing hand grenades, shooting rockets, healing, or spawning drones to help you accomplish both campaign and PvP missions. Which brings us to the different game modes this 3rd person shooter game has. The main game mode is Campaign, which includes Episodes that are a series of 5 missions, with the last being a boss battle.
For you tougher types, there are also Elite missions in each Episode, which are significantly harder missions with big cash payouts. Each mission Regular or Elite has a 3 skull difficulty, where each skull is an achievement you have earned during the mission. Simply put, your objective is to complete each mission. The first is staying alive, and the second is completing all achievements. Completed “skull achievements” for each mission provide increased cash payouts, experience, new squad mates, ammunition, or other consumable item.
Boss Battles can be difficult, so you will want to ensure you have the right “fire power” before going into one of these battles. Firepower is determined by your weapon type and how much damage it does. When you start this game, you have a basic assault rifle and sniper rifle. As you earn cash through gameplay, you need to upgrade them each in 4 different areas to be able to hang with the gameplay as you play through campaign missions. You can replay any mission and earn more cash, even complete missed achievements over and over without the worry of running out of energy – which is a bit of a change for many Glu Mobile games.
This makes Frontline Commando 2 continuously playable in campaign game mode. The second gameplay mode is PvP, which is alright, but lacks any real sense of challenge. PvP is a matchup “shoot out” between you and another Frontline Commando 2 player. It is not “realtime” and many times it is not very challenging. You earn considerable cash amounts playing PvP, but you can only play 3 missions because there is an energy requirement for this gameplay mode. There are stats for PvP that show where you rank based on your win/lose ratio. Those are the basics for this Frontline game, but is the game good?
Is This Game Worth Playing
If you like arcade shooter games, you will dig Frontline Commando 2. Glu has done a fine job of refining this game with very nice touch controls and stellar graphics. Glu has even made the game continuously playable without in-app purchase, which is a big shift away from their other free-to-play game models like Zombies Ate My Friends. I found myself playing daily due to the “fun factor” Frontline Commando 2 delivers. I did spend a few bucks on in-app purchases and felt the money was well spent. However, I did replay a load of missions, especially after upgrading my weapons. You will find previously completed missions and earlier Elite missions easier to complete after upgrading your weapons, fairly obvious.
I will have to say that Frontline Commando 2 played much better on my iPad Air than it did on my Nexus 7 (2013 model). But I still had a blast playing the game on both devices.
Frontline Commando 2 is well worth the download, more so if you are an arcade shooter game fan, but you don’t have to be to enjoy this mobile game!
