The Happy Tree Friends gang is back in a crazy Games app called Happy Tree Friends Deadeye Derby. It’s a brutal 1-on-1 slingshot shootout with realtime multiplayer gameplay, 4 game areas, and killer boss battles. And there’s a reason this “real time” multiplayer slingshot shootout includes the phrase “Deadeye Derby.”
The main objective of this game is to shoot your opponent’s eyes out, thus reducing their aim and ultimately hitting them enough to take their health bar to 0.
Happy Tree Friends Deadeye Derby Overview
Happy Tree Friends is a cartoon internet phenomenon that began back in 1999. Now, this funny yet grotesque cartoon features a solid cult following. As Wikipedia describes the show here: “the action and adventure comedy is drawn in simple appearance and combines cute forest animals with extreme graphic violence. Each episode revolves around the characters enduring accidental events of bloodshed, pain, dismemberment and/or death.” (Happy Tree Friends – Wikipedia). The Happy Tree Friends Deadeye Derby app brings this internet cartoon to the iOS platform as a fun multiplayer game.
If you have not already guessed it, you can play as some of your favorite Happy Tree Friends characters in this morbid multiplayer game. Cuddles, Toothy, Giggles, and Nutty are readily playable for the most part, and premium HTF characters like Handy, Disco Bear, and Splendid can be unlocked using diamonds. Which brings us to the currency model for this free-to-play game. There are coins you can earn as well as buy using diamonds, and diamonds are only available through in app purchase from $0.99 to $49.99. There is also an energy requirement that allows you to play 5 games before you need to have your energy replenished. However, I have played this game for 2 weeks and have spent nothing.
As already mentioned, each game you play is a real time slingshot shootout where you are trying to shoot your opponent’s eyes out. First, to hinder their aim, and second to otherwise kill them to win the match. There are currently 4 game areas all with very relevant names (Camp Pokeneyeout, Terror Trails, Rabid Rapids, and the Lost Mines). The game areas each include a challenging boss battle after you achieve a certain number of wins or a win streak. Additionally, each new game area has more obstacles making your slingshot shooting a bit more difficult. But to give you an advantage wherever you play, you can upgrade your cart and slingshot as well as purchase better ammo and health kits.
How To Shoot Your Opponent’s Eye Out
As the old adage goes, “it’s all fun and games until someone gets an eye poked out.” That saying goes out the window in this virtual slingshot shootout game. Once you hit “Play” you are randomly matched up with an opponent in the game area you select. You can load out ammo and health kits before doing so if you have them. Once you both hit “Start” it is game on. You play this game using your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad Three-axis gyro and Accelerometer to aim. You then pull back on your virtual slingshot to shoot your foe’s eyes out, or at least hit them. There is an added difficulty to this game. While trying to kill your opponent you are driving automatically from left to right passing obstacles that will hinder your shooting as well as distract you. There are also positives like floating chests you will want to tap on to get coins and extras.
The first player to lose all his or her health loses the match. Hitting your enemy’s eyes gives you, yes, a “bullseye” – which usually leads to the eye literally falling out. And how do you know when you have been hit in the eye? You will see blood splatter on the screen, and if hit multiple times you will begin to lose vision of your opponent. Win or lose, you will get rewards at the end of the game, but obviously winning gains you more and will let you take on the Boss for each game area if you can achieve the correct win streak.
Happy Tree Friends Deadeye Derby is probably not a good game for young kids due to the whole eye-popping-out part and potential bodily dismemberment. But as a multiplayer game for teens and up, it is a whole lot of fun despite the grotesque nature of the game. It is free to play, so if you want to shoot someone’s out out (virtually that is), then this is the game for you.
