Looking for a great “magical” game to play, that can be played anytime, against anyone, and is FREE? Sounds like a tall order, but look no further than Hero Academy (by Robot Entertainment), an apparent collaborative team effort from the makers of Halo Wars and Ages of Empire. Hero Academy has the right mix of quick fun, magical strategy, cool game items, and overall mobile excellence in an iPhone game. The game pits you against the world while playing as a member of the Human Council or as the Dark Elves. The overall objective is to destroy your opponent’s crystals while playing on a chessboard environment, in a turn-by-turn game. There are a variety of allies or characters on your team such as fighters, archers, clerics, ninjas and more to help your efforts. While the main goal is to destroy the crystals of your opposing team, there is some fun in taking out the various enemies with spells, brute force, and other items — which at times also deplete their crystals as well.
My favorite feature of this game is that it is played at your own pace and allows you to have multiple games going at once. Since your turn only takes a matter of seconds and your opponent may not respond for hours, you will get a push notification once it is your turn again. Hero Academy has sucked me in and I have yet to fork out any real world cash while playing, which I am not afraid to do (and do all the time), but I haven’t had any reason to do so because this game does not require it to beat your opponent, which is a bit different than many freemium game models. This game does have in app purchases available for customization and for purchasing the Dark Elves, but again, I have not spent any money on this game and have been having a blast. One big draw back that will take some getting used to is the big advertisement you will be exposed to after each and every turn. This is how they are making the revenue off this app and I respect it. At first the ad was really bothersome because it appears immediately after you submit your turn. However, after time, it begins to fade and becomes a non-issue, at least it has for me. Hero Academy is engrossing and I can see myself playing multiple games for quite awhile — looking forward to more character classes as well, as there is lots of room for growth in this game.
