The Montessori teaching method comes from an Italian physician/educator named Maria Montessori who developed a teaching method based on her study of children. This teaching method has been around since the early 1900′s and is common in private school teachings. Now there is an iPhone education app that takes the Montessori method to help children learn how to read, write, and spell with crossword game play. The application opens up to a main menu that has 3 different learning modes based on difficulty level and one free style spell mode called “moveable alphabet.”
The main menu also has tips for parents, the ability to share the app with others over social networks, a feedback button, as well as other games by this developer button. Once the user selects a eduction mode (1-3) they are taken to another screen which provides the education game play. There are additional menu options here to change the font, get help from an onscreen tutorial, and to reset the current learning level. There is also a back button to return to the main menu. The learning modes in this kids app are for ages from 3 to 9 years of age and are focused on the user (children) completing crossword puzzles with hints only from pictures. Once children complete a puzzle level they are given an interactive reward on screen (pretty cool). This iPhone kids app is one of my favorite reading/writing learning apps I have reviewed so far. The application is easy to use for both parents and kids and focuses on reading/writing skills in a fun way. CM
