UpdatedSmash Cops was updated on November 14, 2012, and received minor bug fixes. The selling price at the time of update was $2.99, but since the release of Smash Cops Heat, the price was jacked up to $6.99, but reduced now to a still costly $4.99. I like Hutch, and both Smash Cops and Smash Cops Heat, but in my opinion, the price for this game is still too high at $4.99.

Having been a police officer and involved in numerous police pursuits, I can tell you that Smash Cops for the iPhone and iPad (by Hutch) is the first video game that I’ve played (with a computer-based opponent) that has successfully mimicked the actual “behavior” of a real criminal. Yes, Smash Cops in my humble opinion has done a great job of providing development code that has the criminals (you are chasing) make realistic screwed-up and randomly unexpected turns and decisions that humans tend to make while running from the police, as part of the gameplay. This game also introduces a sort of new control technique where you use your finger to control the car (not so new) and a tap on the screen with your non-controlling finger to perform a (new) “Precision Immobilization Technique” (PIT) that makes this game quite fun to play.

Smash Cops has more than just police pursuit game modes inside this app, and includes challenges to complete a coned driving course in as little time as possible, obtain evidence throughout the city, respond to robbery calls, and more. The game is a little cheesy in the reality department when criminals attack your police car (but this is a game), and it adds to the overall difficulty factor, as well as the fun factor. Smash Cops’ only big limitation, as in all my favorite games, is that there isn’t enough game content, but in due time. I am sure there will be more realistic police pursuing levels with more features like shooting, ramming vehicles into explosions, and more — at least I hope there will be.
