The Snow Queen Musical Children’s Interactive Storybook

Classic fairy tales and books based on these have always been some of my favorite and my children’s favorite as well. The Snow Queen Musical Children’s Interactive Storybook Adventure (by Sunshine Musicals) is a wonderful example of a classically inspired storybook that sparks the imagination due to its beautiful graphics, stunning music and songs, engaging sounds, professional storytelling, and interactive coloring pages.

This story is based on the well-known fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen, The Snow Queen, a compelling story about good vs. evil and true friendship. In this iPad story, our heroine Gerda has to embark upon a long journey to save her best friend, a boy named Kai, from an enchanted spell and the clutches of wicked Snow Queen. The artwork is reminiscent of Disney quality, being very pretty, detailed, and compelling to look at.

You’ll find a handful of animations and interactions on every page, and although there are nice animations throughout, many of the characters’ movements and a few interactive opportunities come across as a bit mechanical as they bob, float, or see-saw across the pages in a paper doll fashion. But oddly enough, there is an interesting quality about them. The beautifully orchestrated music caught my attention upon opening the app, along with the 5 original songs you’ll find within the 27 pages of the story. Your kids will definitely enjoy singing along with the text provided. I was pleasantly surprised by the great quality of the music and vocalists, as well as the background sounds. I especially liked the howling wind and swirling snow that literally made me want to curl up with a blanket.

The music and graphics (of an evil fairy floating in the dark sky) grabbed my attention right from the start, but it was the moment that the professional narration began that I was hooked by the “elderly” women drawing me in closer to listen for a spell as the whole tale unfolded before my eyes. After listening to the awesome story, children will be happy to discover coloring sheets. There are 4 coloring sheets depicting the main characters from the story with 14 different colors to choose from. Kids will find 3 thicknesses to color in their chosen picture with, using either their fingers or a styllus. There are also 2 types of erasers and the option to save to the camera roll. Although I love the idea of coloring sheets to go along with the story, coloring in the very fine details of the drawings and keeping them within the lines was a little frustrating.

As far as app navigation, I found the navigation in this book to be very easy to use and get around in. The story can be enjoyed in two ways: Read to Me or Read it Myself. The Read to Me has highlighted text good for emerging readers and also helps you follow along with the story at a nice pace. Animations, sound effects, and all music and songs are heard in this mode. There isn’t any highlighted text when reading alone, but animations, sound effects, music and some songs are still present. I think the animations are better received when in the narration mode surrounded by all the combined sounds. Simple right and left arrows take you page by page or you can touch the snowflake icon (upper right) to return you back to the home page, or the More button to skip to any page, the credits, contact information, and coloring pages.

Regardless of the few minor quirks, The Snow Queen Musical Children’s Interactive Storybook Adventure, iPad Book app, is overall an irresistible book that combines so many wonderful aspects (pretty graphics, stunning music and songs, engaging sounds, and professional storytelling) that you can’t help but get caught up in the awesome theatrical/musical experience.
