Tiny Wings HD (by Andreas Illiger) lets you fly on your iPad with a laid-back game, now with 3 game modes, Lifesaver-type graphics, and changing backgrounds each day. Tiny Wings flew into the iTunes App Store in February 2011 and has been a huge hit ever since. The Tiny Wings iPhone game app provides a simple, casual, almost hypnotic-type game experience with appropriate stress-free music and subtle, yet very weirdly colored/textured environments. It is no wonder that Tiny Wings HD newly released on July 12, 2012 has been a huge hit. This game now features 3 game modes, Retina Display graphics, and a cool feature called “Procedural” graphics that provide different unique environments for game areas on a daily basis; yes, you will see the same level different each day — very, very cool!
The gameplay for Tiny Wings HD is just as fantastic and mellow as the original iPhone version, tap the screen on gliding down slopes and let off as you zoom out. There are coins to collect and blue speed orbs that will get your Mama bird moving in the Day Trip game mode. The Flight School game mode provides 15 hand-crafted levels of racing against other birds (3) to see who will be first to the nest. The AI is tough in this game mode and will challenge even the best gamer, but for novices like me it still provides a healthy challenge that made me want to keep on playing. The final game mode, Hill Party, seems a bit impractical to me as it is designed for 2 player iPad gaming on the same device. The screen is split and you play head-to-head against another person opponent. I don’t like it for this game because there is significant screen touching, which can move the device, and the gaming experience is not the same when you set the iPad flat on a surface. Perhaps a remote feature used through iPhones or iPod Touches would work better. A no-brainer to this solution is to add Apple Game Center peer-match gameplay.
Tiny Wings HD is a simplistic, fun, and laid-back game that has the potential to become a bit frustrating when you hit the hills the wrong way, but this is also what makes the game great and kept me coming back over and over to try again. With the addition of the changing graphics, this game is very much re-playable and worth the $2.99 spend to get it. While this app did not come out super fast to the iPad, I appreciate the developer’s thoughtful progression and development, and especially appreciate that this is one of those popular/iconic apps in the iTunes App Store that does not come from a big corporation trying to suck money out of our pockets through aggressive in app purchases, instead with this app you get a complete high-quality game that you can play again and again. Tiny Wings HD iPad App Developer Description
iOS iPad
You have always dreamed of flying – but your wings are tiny. Luckily the world is full of beautiful hills. Use the hills as jumps – slide down, flap your wings and fly! At least for a moment – until this annoying gravity brings you back down to earth. But the next hill is waiting for you already. Watch out for the night and fly as fast as you can. Otherwise flying will only be a dream once again.
Tiny Wings was chosen as the iPhone Game of the Year in App Store Rewind 2011 in Europe and many other countries. Thank you Apple and a big thank you to all Tiny Wings fans!
