Google had their previously native YouTube iPhone app removed when Apple rolled out its iOS 6. The YouTube iPhone Photography app was released on 09/11/12, and is a FREE app. This app has reached the #1 rank in over 100 countries in iTunes, including the US where it is currently the #1 Overall FREE iPhone app. The old YouTube native app was rather basic, played videos in landscape mode, and did not have a lot of pizzazz. However, the new YouTube app has been nicely redesigned providing a mini-website YouTube experience. My favorite change is that the video now plays in portrait mode and plays rather quickly.
You can also do a lot of things when a video is playing, such as: Share, Add to Watch Later, Add to Favorites, Add to Playlist or Flag. The Sharing function offers the big 3 social sites (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) where you can email, message and copy to clipboard, allowing you to share videos easier than ever before. Another very cool feature is that Google has added “Voice search” to the YouTube app making searches much faster and easier than before. However, speak clearly to make sure your words are recognized. Another interesting change to the YouTube search is the addition of Channels now when searching. For example if you search the keywords “iPhone Apps” you will get both Videos and Channels, where CrazyMikesapps on YouTube is the 3rd result — just saying. This is a great way to find new Channels you may want to subscribe to — possibly ours (shameless plug).
This app opens up immediately to Highlights or Uploads only, and allows you to quickly select any subscribed channels easily with a tap on the settings. You can also add Channels quite easily, and overall, this app is job well done by Google. The YouTube app is also available for the Android, but has not become available for the iPad yet. I suspect YouTube is crafting a very nice iPad app that will really take advantage of the devices screen size — I’m looking forward to this.
