Playground HD – Kid Friendly iPad Game App

Playground HD (by Jan Essig) is an application for young children that combines 12 different activities into one convenient app with activities ranging from spot-the-difference, card matching, puzzles, drawing/painting, a musical piano keyboard, to games — there are way too many activities to easily list, but I will: Search, Pairs, Puzzle, Draw, Erase, Slide, Catch, Remember, Piano, Collect, Roll, and Color.

The user interface is pleasingly simple, you won’t find a lot of buttons here to take your kids off course to somewhere a parent wouldn’t want them to go. There are no in app purchases to pay for or ads to serve as distractions — just pure kid-friendly entertainment. The opening screen presents 6 of the 12 activities, and the other 6 can be accessed by tapping the “2” button on the top left of the page or swiping to the right. There are only 2 other buttons: for rating the app and the settings area (email, share, language selection,etc.). One really nice feature in the settings area is that there are 15 languages to select from — that alone is a pretty cool feature for introducing children to a variety of languages.

The graphics are very appealing and playful throughout the application. The first activity is Search, a sort of look-and-find with many scenes to choose from, stars populate across the top board to give positive visual progress, and a harp-sound strums upon successful completion — these elements are seen and heard throughout the app. Pairs is similar but is matching like animal pairs. The Puzzle activity boards remind me of the wooden jigsaw puzzles my kids loved to do over and over again when they were little, and I was surprised to see that there are 25 puzzle boards available. The Slide is another type of puzzle board but all the pieces (but 1) are given to you, but not in the correct order, and it’s your job to slide them in the correct order to set the picture right — this can get pretty challenging. Roll is similar to the Slide puzzle, except easier because the puzzle pieces flip until a right match is found.

One of my favorites is the Erase (5 scene boards) because that little kid in me couldn’t resist the temptation to run my fingers over the black and white picture (containing many eyeballs) to inject some color into the scene, as well as to reveal to whom all those eyes belonged. The Draw section (9 pictures to color and 1 blank to free draw) has a similar feel as the Erase activity but brings the fun of drawing and painting with a variety of brush sizes and tons of paint colors to choose from. There’s an option to erase with a virtual eraser using your own fingers, clear the whole picture or just portions of it through the undo and redo arrows, as well as a camera to snap a photo of your masterpiece to be saved to the camera roll.

The Remember and Catch work on memory recall and quick responses. Collect and Colors seems to provide more of a relaxing “just for fun” game-playing experience. What kids’ app would be complete with a musical element? Smiles are sure to appear when playing in the Piano area, which features 4 animals types (cat, frog, cow, fish) to choose from to fill screen.

You have the option to press the piano key to hear the animal sounds or press the musical note to hear the real piano sounds, but the fun doesn’t stop there because a musical note floats out the each animal’s mouth when their specific piano key is tapped. Obviously, this app is jam-packed with fun activities that I could go on and on about, but I think you (I mean your child) would have a whole lot more fun trying it out for themselves. “A nice and sturdy playground app, with lots of entertaining options. Carefully produced, available in 16 languages. WORTH THE PICK!!”
“Forget about downloading multiple apps to ensure all your kid’s favorite games are on your iPad. Install one and be done with Playground HD, a collection of nine popular games, handpicked with the help of the developer’s own children. …”
“Spielplatz HD ist unsere App der Woche und bekommt die höchste Bewertung von AppGarten verliehen: 5+1 STARS.”

Together with my two children (4 + 2 years) we developed an App that contains their current favorite games. We have tried to make all games as clear and simple as possible. We have also tried to optimize those things we disliked in other games.

Even the most beautiful game becomes boring sometime. The following search for “another game” somewhere on the iPad always was quite nerve-wracking and frustrating for my kids (and me). Fortunately this is past. All games are clearly structured on the title screen so your children can quickly change the game without getting lost in the vastness of the iPad.

Besides my activities as a dad, I work as a freelance illustrator and game developer. Therefore I would be very pleased about your rating (as positive as possible of course) or any feedback. Feel free to contact me if you have suggestions for improvement or your child have any motive wishes for the playground.

Thank you in advance and have fun!
